Crossing Paths

July 30, 2006

I was sitting in Sunday School this morning and I noticed that two new women were being introduced in our class.  They were talking to one of the teachers when I heard someone use my name as a question.  My mind began reaching back into the old memories and began to comprehend that I knew that voice.  It then had to try and remember the name.  Misty Jones.  A friend of mine from NSU and the BCM.  She left NSU in 2002 for LSU and spent the last few years teaching in Louisiana.  However last weekend she moved to Ft Worth to start a new teaching position.  Her supervisor invited her to Travis and they stopped by our class.  It was good to see a familiar face and just reminisce.  At the same time, it seemed odd that we'd end up crossing paths in the way that it happened.

Two sides to each coin

July 30, 2006

So I started my new job this past week.  However this job now puts me in a situation.  There is the part of me that would like to get more hours and quit my job at Pizza Hut.  So side one.  I wouldn’t have to work as much and the job doesn’t require me to stand for hours on end or spend all night driving around.

But if I quit my job at Pizza Hut then I will have effectively isolated myself to live in my Christian bubble.  Despite my desire for comfort and to take the easy way out, I know God has placed me at Pizza Hut for a reason.  There are hurting people that need hope.  So despite what I want I know I need to keep my job at Pizza Hut.

So my prayer is that my friendships at Pizza Hut would deepen and allow me the opportunity to share with them what Christ has done in my life and what He can do in theirs.

iTunes is cool.

July 30, 2006

So the other day I decided I would check out iTunes, seeing as it automatically installed on my laptop when I upgraded QuickTime.  There were a few podcasts I had heard about based off of radio shows.  However in my exploration I found several others.

This Week in Tech (TWiT) – Is so far one of my favorite podcasts.  Leo Laporte is the host.  If you ever watched TechTV a few years ago, he was on “The Screensavers.”  I enjoy this show because they talk about all things technology but it’s not a show for the masses.  It is geared toward people that either work or spend most of their time in the technology sector.

Insight For Living – I listen to Chuck Swindoll during the week while I’m driving but now if I miss a sermon I can pick it up on his podcast.

Money Matters – This is another show I listen to while out delivering pizzas.  Every time I listen, I’m encouraged to work harder to get out of debt.  Update: 1/27/2010 – Money Matters is no longer produced but has been replaced by MoneyLife.

New Job

July 27, 2006

After about four weeks of interviews and spending time in prayer I have taken a job as Web Administrator at Fielder Road Baptist Church. In the past week, I have made the mundane changes of text on a page and I've begun implemation of a podcast for the church. Along with that I'm in charge beginning the migration from PHP to DotNetNuke. At least this will force me to learn ASP.NET and plus I can play with the bells and whistles of DotNetNuke. As soon as my test server finishes formatting the 700GB drive, I will set up IIS, SQL, and DotNetNuke. Then the fun will begin. I can crash it with infinite loops or just generally break things while learning .Net.
